Sobekneferu, the last ruler of the 12th dynasty, ascended to the throne in 1786 BCE. To avoid the limitations placed on women in ancient Egyptian society, she assumed the name of her predecessor, Neferusobek, and dressed as a male pharaoh. Archaeologists have discovered evidence of her reign, including a stele with her name and title, confirming her unique approach to ruling.
