The high pH level is due to the presence of natron, a mineral that's left behind by the evaporation of saltwater. This unusual chemistry has been known to calcify and preserve dead animals, effectively turning them into statues that can remain intact for years. The lake's unique properties have even led to the discovery of well-preserved bird and bat remains.
