Lake Natron in Tanzania is a saltwater lake that is so alkaline, it turns dead animals into stone. With a pH level of around 10.5, it's one of the most alkaline bodies of water on Earth. The lake's surface is also a near-perfect mirror, reflecting the surrounding landscape like a still photograph. The unique chemistry of the lake is due to the presence of natron, a mineral that's left behind by the evaporation of ancient salt lakes.
