There's a computer program that can generate its own successor.

In 1993, the Genetic Algorithm program, written by John Koza, was designed to evolve its own computer programs. The program, called "Recursive Program Generation," used a genetic algorithm to generate new programs from existing ones, leading to the creation of an improved version of itself. This self-replicating program was able to modify its own code and create a more efficient successor, demonstrating a form of artificial evolution.
