There's a 1,000-year-old "Tree of Ténéré" in Niger with a surprising history
In the heart of the Sahara Desert, a lone acacia tree, named the "Tree of Ténéré", stood for over a millennium, serving as a symbol of endurance and survival. Measuring only 5.8 meters tall, this remarkable tree was the last of its kind, having outlived its companions in a region where sandstorms and droughts are common. The tree was so iconic that it was even featured on the Nigerien 5 franc banknote in the 1970s, and its notoriety eventually led to its transplantation in 1973 to a safer location where it still stands today.
