The Turkestan cockroach-ant (Polyergus breviceps) has a unique relationship with its colonies. One colony is a "slave-maker" and raids neighboring colonies to steal their young, incorporating them into their own colony. However, the queen ant of the slave-maker colony is said to live indefinitely, with one individual reportedly living for 15 years, a remarkable feat for an insect, and a record that has yet to be beaten. This ant's remarkable longevity has led scientists to study its colonies to understand the secrets of its extended lifespan.
