The largest known prime number, M77232917 × 2^77232917 + 1, was discovered in 2018 by a team of mathematicians using a distributed computing project. This behemoth of a number is a Mersenne prime, named after the French mathematician Marin Mersenne, who first described them in the 17th century. Verifiable through the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) project, which has been ongoing since 1996.
