The largest known prime number, known as M77232917, was discovered in 2018 by a distributed computing project. This behemoth of a number was first detected on January 17, 2018, by a volunteer computer user in the UK, and was later confirmed by a team of mathematicians. It was named after the mathematician who first proposed the method used to find it.
