Lake Natron in Tanzania is a saline soda lake that is known for its extreme alkalinity, reaching pH levels of up to 10.5. This unique environment causes the bodies of dead animals to calcify, effectively turning them into statues. In 2016, photographer Nick Brandt captured images of birds and bats that had been killed by the lake's toxic waters, their bodies frozen in time as if petrified. The lake's extreme chemistry has made it a natural preservative, allowing for the fossilization of animals in a matter of weeks.
