In 1908, a 20-horsepower Oldsmobile driven by Frenchman Théophile-Alexandre Steinheil completed a 40,000-mile journey from Paris to Paris. The car, with a top speed of 35 miles per hour, averaged about 500 miles per day. The journey was part of a publicity stunt to promote the Oldsmobile brand and was witnessed by the French Automobile Club. This remarkable feat of endurance was achieved in the early days of automobile travel, when roads were rough and vehicles were relatively primitive.
