The Principality of Sealand is a self-proclaimed micronation located on a World War II naval fort off the coast of Suffolk, England. The tiny archipelago has a total land area of approximately 0.024 square kilometers (0.0092 square miles), making it the smallest internationally recognized country in the world. Sealand was established in 1967 by Paddy Roy Bates, a British engineer, who claimed the fort as his own sovereign territory and declared independence from the United Kingdom.
