The Anglo-Zanzibar War, fought on August 27, 1896, between the United Kingdom and Zanzibar, lasted a mere 38 minutes. The war began as a dispute over who should be the ruler of Zanzibar, but escalated into a full-scale conflict when the UK demanded the resignation of the pro-German Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini. The UK's warship HMS Philomel bombarded Zanzibar's fortifications, leading to the surrender of the Zanzibari forces and the installation of a new, pro-British sultan.
