The RRS Shackleton was once a British whaling ship, then a museum, and now a survey vessel

The RRS Shackleton was built in 1936 as the British whaler Southern Quest, but was requisitioned by the British government during World War II. After the war, it was converted into a museum ship in 1956, and in 1994, it was donated to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and converted into a research vessel, now used for oceanographic and geophysical surveys. The ship's conversion and repurposing make it a unique example of a vessel's reuse and adaptation.
