The Cave of El Castillo, located in northern Spain, contains a series of prehistoric paintings on the walls, with the oldest being a red hand stencil. Radiocarbon dating has confirmed that these paintings date back to the Upper Paleolithic era, with estimates suggesting they were created between 40,500 and 37,000 years ago. This makes them the oldest known paintings in the world, predating the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia by tens of thousands of years.
