In 1942, a Consolidated PB4Y-1 Liberator seaplane, piloted by Lieutenant Commander Edward O'Hare, took off from the USS Wasp aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Ocean. The plane flew over 8,300 miles, crossing the equator and reaching the coast of Brazil, before landing safely back on the carrier.
