On April 14, 1893, a sudden and extreme cold front swept through the Midwest, causing temperatures to plummet as much as 80°F (27°C) in just a few hours. This phenomenon, known as the Great Blue Norther, brought winter-like conditions to parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, with temperatures dropping from 60°F (16°C) to -20°F (-29°C) in some areas. The event was so severe that it brought the growing season to a halt and is still studied by meteorologists today for its remarkable display of atmospheric instability.
