On January 12, 1873, a freak weather event known as the Great Blue Norther swept across the Great Plains of the United States, dropping temperatures by as much as 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius) in just 24 hours. The rapid temperature drop caused widespread damage and disruption, with reports of livestock frozen to death and crops destroyed. This extreme weather event remains one of the most dramatic examples of a cold front in North American history, with records still studied by meteorologists today.
