The First Computer Bug Was an Actual Insect

In 1947, a team of engineers at Harvard University was working on the Mark II computer when they encountered a problem. The machine's relay system had been affected by a moth that had been sucked into the system and caused it to malfunction. The engineers taped the moth to the computer log with the note "First actual case of bug being found." This incident marked the first recorded use of the term "bug" to describe a computer error.
