The 1,000mph land speed record was almost held in a car shaped like a toilet

In 1997, British engineer Richard Noble was attempting to break the land speed record in his jet-powered car, Thrust SSC. To test the stability of the car at high speeds, Noble installed a dummy toilet in the cockpit, which was designed to mimic the weight and shape of a human pilot. The car was not actually powered by a toilet, but the unusual shape helped the team to fine-tune the aerodynamics and eventually achieve a top speed of 1,000.36mph.
