Supernova Dust Found in Antarctic Ice

In 2006, a team of scientists discovered dust from a supernova explosion in a chunk of Antarctic ice. The dust was found in a 12-meter-thick ice core extracted from the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. The dust particles were dated back to around 7,600 years ago, when a supernova exploded about 2,000 light-years away. This finding was confirmed by the University of Michigan's Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space, and published in the journal Nature.
