In certain species of paper wasps, such as the genus Polistes, females outnumber males by a significant margin. In some colonies, as many as 95% of individuals are female, while males make up only 5%. This unusual sex ratio is thought to be an adaptation to ensure the colony's survival, as females are responsible for foraging and caring for young.
