Pablo Picasso's Guernica was exhibited upside down

The Spanish artist's powerful anti-war painting was displayed with its canvas turned 90 degrees, so that the viewer's gaze was directed upwards towards the top of the canvas, rather than following the traditional convention of viewing art from top to bottom. This unconventional presentation was a deliberate choice by the artist, who wanted to emphasize the chaos and disorder of war. The inverted display was first used in 1939, when Guernica was exhibited at the Spanish Republic's pavilion at the World's Fair in New York.
