These hidden passages were built to enable the poor to move undetected through the city, avoiding the gaze of the wealthy and authorities. In Dublin's city center, for example, there are over 12 miles of hidden tunnels and passageways that crisscross beneath the streets, remnants of a time when poverty and famine were rampant.
