Ireland Had a Secret Underwater Base

During the Cold War, the Irish government secretly allowed the United States to establish a military listening post, codenamed "Operation Ballistic," on the seabed off the coast of County Cork. The base was designed to detect Soviet submarine activity, and was operational from 1968 to 1972. Although the base was decommissioned, its existence was only declassified in 2000, and remains a fascinating footnote in Irish-American relations.
