IBM's AI System, Watson, Was Originally Designed to Play Jeopardy!
In 2007, IBM's AI team, led by David Ferrucci, began developing an artificial intelligence system that could compete against humans on the popular trivia game show Jeopardy! The system, code-named "Watson," was trained on a massive corpus of text data and was able to accurately answer questions in a variety of categories. Watson's victory on Jeopardy! in 2011 marked a significant milestone in the development of artificial intelligence, and its technology has since been applied in various fields, including healthcare and customer service.
