Glowing mushrooms, scientifically known as jack o'lantern mushrooms, are a type of fungus that emits a greenish-blue light to attract insects for spore dispersal. This phenomenon is caused by a chemical reaction involving the breakdown of a molecule called luciferin. Bioluminescent fungi like these can be found in the wild, particularly in North America, and are often associated with decaying organic matter. Research has shown that these glowing mushrooms can be found in over 70 species worldwide.
