Deep in the forests of North America, certain species of mushrooms, like Armillaria mellea, can be found emitting a soft, greenish-blue glow in the dark. This phenomenon is caused by a chemical reaction involving the breakdown of a molecule called luciferin, which is produced by the mushroom's cells. This bioluminescence is not just a rare occurrence, but can be seen in many parts of the forest floor, particularly in areas with high humidity and low light levels.
