In 1988, a severe cyclone hit Bangladesh, causing the heaviest rainfall in recorded history. The torrential downpour dumped an astonishing 945 mm (37.2 in) of rain in just 24 hours, equivalent to 64% of the country's average daily water supply. The extreme flooding resulted in over 10,000 deaths and widespread destruction. The disaster led to significant changes in Bangladesh's weather monitoring and emergency response systems.
