Antarctic Midge Outlived the Dinosaurs - Apparently.
The Antarctic midge, a tiny insect, has been found to have survived unchanged since the time of the dinosaurs. Fossil records show that the midge, Belgica antarctica, was present in Antarctica during the Jurassic period, over 190 million years ago. Its unique physiology allows it to survive in extreme cold and has enabled it to adapt to its environment without significant change. This insect has been frozen in time, making it a remarkable example of evolutionary stability.
