In 1956, the first computer-generated music composition was created by the Canadian composer Barbara Priest and the computer programmer Max Mathews. The piece, called "Music 1," was composed using the IBM 701 computer and took approximately 4 hours to generate. This pioneering work in algorithmic composition marked the beginning of AI's influence on music, paving the way for future innovations in electronic and digital music. The composition is now considered a landmark in the history of music technology.
